India captain Rohit Sharma believes the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium pitch was devoid of demons and believes that application and planning are essential for success on spin-friendly subcontinent wickets. Before the start of the first Test, which India won by an innings and 132 runs on Saturday, the Australian media began debating the pitch, claiming that the hosts had prepared a rank-turner to unsettle the touring side’s left-handed batters.

“Need To Have Application…”: Rohit Sharma Reveals the Secret to Success in Indian Pitches

However, Rohit, who scored 120 runs in India’s 400 all out response to Australia’s 177 in the first innings, believes that a batter must employ a few unconventional strategies to score on such surfaces.

“The last few years, the kind of pitches we’ve been playing in India, you need to have application and some sort of plan to score runs,” Rohit said following India’s three-day victory, which gave them a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

“I grew up playing a lot in Mumbai on a lot of turning surfaces. You must also be a little unconventional, using your feet. It is also necessary to put pressure on bowlers by doing something different. And that difference could be anything you want it to be: using your feet, sweeping, or reverse-sweeping.” After missing a few Tests recently, Rohit was overjoyed with his century.

“Yeah, it was (a special hundred) considering a lot of things. The start of the series is critical because it determines where we stand in the (World Test) championship table.

“We know that in a series like this, it’s critical to get off to a good start. I was pleased that I could deliver a performance that would benefit the team. “I was unfortunate to have missed a few Test matches, but I’m glad to be back,” he said.

“Since I was appointed Test captain, (I) have played just two Tests. Covid arrived in England, he missed South Africa, and he suffered a freak injury against Bangladesh. I was prepared for this one. Things happen when you play for a long time, but I’ve had injuries before and know how to recover from them.” Despite the fact that Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin shone in the spin department, Rohit credited his opening pace pair, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj, for setting the tone.

“It was the seamers’ first two overs. 2/2 — starting a game like that puts you in the lead. “From there, the opposition is under pressure,” he said.

“We are confident in our spin department. On a pitch like that, the seamers can be just as dangerous.” Even though the pitch turned in the first innings, Australia captain Pat Cummins said it was not unplayable.

“The game moves pretty quickly here in India at times. They (India) performed admirably. When the spinners are spinning, they are always hard work. “Rohit performed admirably,” he said.

“The wicket spun but wasn’t unplayable (in the first innings). We should’ve scored 100 runs more. Starting here is difficult.” “(Todd) Murphy made an excellent debut. He’s been outstanding. “He bowled a lot of overs,” Cummins said of the debutant off-spinner, who finished with match figures of 7 for 124.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who was named “Player of the Match” for his match haul of 7/81 and a crucial 70, said it was a dream comeback after missing nearly five months due to knee surgery.

“It feels amazing… after five months of giving my all, taking wickets and scoring runs. It feels fantastic. “I worked hard while at NCA while also doing my rehab,” he explained.

“(I) would like to thank all of the NCA staff, physios, and trainers for their hard work with me.” The spinner stated that when batting, he concentrated on hitting the right areas and kept things simple.

“I looked to bowl in good areas, the ball was spinning, going straight, and staying low,” Jadeja explained.

“I’m sure the Australians will try to sweep and reverse sweep. In general, I try to keep things simple (with the bat) and avoid making too many changes. I’m concentrating more on my batting now because it’s a crucial number, 5, 6, 7, and I have to put myself under pressure.”
